The Amazing Amaryllis Race
First grade teacher Bobbi Greene, using funds awarded through a teacher grant purchased enough amaryllis bulb kits so that each class and office at W.A. Wright Elementary School could have one. The goal was that all bulbs be potted on the same day, following the same growing instructions. Then the race began to see which class or office had the fastest growing amaryllis. Each class even named their plants. In the process, many lessons were learned; math was used to measure and graph weekly growth, science  standards were used to note the plant needs and growing habits, reading & writing skills  were used to write creative stories and journal the process. Blue ribbons and 2nd place prizes were awarded to those that grew the tallest and first bloomed. The principal made weekly announcements about which plants were in the lead. Each student got to participate and learn with this project in a fun way. Greene states "I have received lots of positive feedback from the project, and several teachers, myself included, would like to do this again next year."
